About

The Pioneer is Whitman College’s weekly student-run newspaper, serving the college’s student body and Walla Walla community, as well as its network of parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters.  As a forum for the student body, The Pioneer is dedicated to expanding open discussion on campus of the issues which most concern students.  We provide coverage of Whitman-related news as well as featured local and regional events, and strive to maintain the highest standards of fairness, quality, and journalistic integrity while promoting freedom of the press and providing students with important journalistic experience.  Most recently, The Pioneer’s Web site won national “Best of Show” honors — placing ahead of much larger schools such as the University of California Berkley and University of Miami — at the annual convention of the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP).

Our Philosophy

The Whitman College Pioneer is the weekly student newspaper; written, designed, edited, photographed, drawn, and distributed by Whitman students through funds provided by ASWC (the Associated Students of Whitman College). The Pioneer is a mouthpiece for the student body, intended to further conversation and discussion about and concerning Whitman College and the world beyond. The Pioneer promotes above all the freedom of the press on campus, and strives to be a cohesive force to Whitman as a whole.
